10 must have Android Games (Contd)

While the best paid for apps can be found on iOS, Android serves up a larger number of free or ad-supported apps. Here's a look at ten of them that are worth installing on your Android phone. All these games are lightweight and geared at the casual gamer, and should run on most entry-level Android phones.

Jewels

Jewels is a clone of Bejeweled, a puzzle game where you group three or more gems of the same colour to start a collapsible domino. The game's mechanics translate well on a touchscreen, the graphics and sounds are well done. The game has four modes - Normal, Timed, Quick, and Infinite. Jewels is free, but ad-supported, with a tiny ad running at the bottom. Totally worth a have.

ConnectToo

Another ad-supported puzzle game, this one exercises your brain cells a lot more. The objective of the game is to connect elements of the same colour while making sure that no two elements get in each other's way. It's quite challenging and fun, with over 200 levels to keep you engaged.

Meganoid

Retro gaming fans will love the minimalist pixel-art style of this side-scroller. The objective of the game is pretty simple - gather diamonds and get your pixelated hero to the end of the level, while avoiding obstacles and pits. The good part is that you don't need a trackball or a D-Pad to play the game.

Robo Defense

This game is a highly addictive clone of the hit flash game Desktop Tower Defense. The goal is to keep fortifying your base to prevent enemies from slipping through the gates, you win upgrade points by mowing down enemies, who get tougher and tougher as the game progresses. This game basically has no ending, and can keep you hooked for hours in an endless cycle of rearmament.

Red Stone

It's a simple puzzle game where you try and wedge out the red block to the exit by moving all the other bricks around. The levels get progressively tougher, apparently nobody has passed all the 10 levels yet. This puzzle game doesn't try to dazzle with sound or graphics, but is a real brain twister.

Rope Cut

Rope cut is a shameless clone of Cut the Rope, a hit game on the iOS platform by Chillingo. It's a bit of a physics puzzle, where you have to cut ropes and try and get the candy into the mouth of a python. It's not available on the Android market, but the APK can be sideloaded from the link below.

MegaJump

Another hit game from the iOS platform makes it to Android as a free app. MegaJump is a whole lot of game with amazing pop sensibilities, your character is fueled by coins and assorted power ups that fuel his ascent, the ride lasts as long as you're on a roll. The install file is 31 MB, best if you have a Froyo phone with a resolution of 800x480 or higher.

Replica Island

This side-scroller works on phones that have a D-Pad or Trackball. The game has over 40 levels and a story-line that's rather trite, but the gameplay is fun and has a lot of old school flavour. The game has seen over a million downloads since it went live last year.

X Construct

The objective of the game is to build a bridge with a limited set of girders, and ensure that the design handles the stress of a passing train. There are 15 levels in all, it's a fun game for anyone who has a bit of an architectural frame of mind.

Angry Birds

A game that needs no introduction, but this list would be incomplete without it. The latest update lets you toggle to a low-detail mode if the framerates are unplayable on your entry-level Android phone.
