Nokia Lumia 800 - Review

Heya techies,

So, its been a long time since I posted, my last post was about NFC from Nokia, which was posted a long time ago. So, now, I'm back!

Nokia Lumia 800As you may have heard these days about the now Nokia Lumia 800. This latest smartphone from the Finnish phone maker totally revolutionises our thoughts about Nokia. So, here you'll find a review of the mobile.

The review includes the following aspects:

1. Network - GSM, 3G speeds etc
2. Camera - Optics, Recording etc
3. Build Quality - Shape, size, weight
4. Overall Performance - RAM, processor, OS
5. Some secondary features - Display, Apps, Battery etc
6. My views

So, what are you waiting for?

Network: Also know as Sea Ray, The Lumia 800 works awesomely on GSM (850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900). Besides this, it also has good 3G compatibility. If you are an avid surfer and geek, then the phone is bound to overcome your needs. While making calls, the voice quality is improved compared to that of N8, E7 and C7.

Camera: Lumia features a 8MP camera with 3264 by 2448 pixels of resolution and autofocus, Carl Ziess Optics and dual LED flash. Its a shame that it doesn't even have the ordinary features like face detections, smile and blink detection etc. (check quality of the camera here). Another weak point is that it doesn't feature a secondary camera, so forget about the video calls, shame.

Build Quality: By dimensions, the Lumia is 116.5 x 61.2 x 12.1 mm, 76.1 cc and weighs 142 g. You have 3 options in colours : Black, Cyan and Magenta.

Overall Performance: Lumia has quite a bit of RAM (512 MB) and a 1.4 Ghz processor. You now maybe will be thinking that it will outperform phones like Galaxy Note and Galaxy S II with a greater processor, but mind you, it has half the RAM, so you wont be able to store much apps in the RAM and it will take more time to load large webpages. Talking of OS, it is, as you know, a Windows phone. It has Windows 7.5 (Mango) which gives Android quite a match. The Lumia lacks Java too.    The phone will only accept MicroSim card only and has 16GB inbuilt memory, with NO memory slot.

Some Secondary Features: It has a 3.7 inch screen with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels and 252 pixel per inch (Pixel density, that is). No comparision in Apps, the Lumia looses its point here, for sure. Battery is quite awesome, with 13 hours talktime (265 stand-by) on 2G and 9.5 hours talktime on 3g (335 hours stand-by).

My views: A good phone for some people but the geeks who want surely more than just 16 GB of storage and 512 MB of RAM should look for some other smartphone, this phone is good for people who just want calling, facebooking, texting and minor features like that.

Verdict: 3. 5 stars. (see full specs)

Okay so guys this is all for now, see ya!

What is NFC?

Heya techies,

You all may have heard about the new Nokia phones with JustTap and NFC enabled, but many of you don't know what is NFC.

So, for those who don't know, here I am! NFC stands for Near-Field-Communication. Phones which have this feature come pre-loaded with a NFC chip.

To use NFC, basically, you have to put the two devices in range, meaning almost touching each other and then you can easily sync contacts, apps etc. (Android 4.0 IceCream Sandwich comes with it).

NFC technology is being used in paying cash from your mobile, like in a hotel, or taking e-pamphlets etc.

I really don't understand what is it's use between two "Phones" to share content keeping both of them touched when you have Bluetooth!

Well, I think Nokia should market and spread this NFC news of its phones first before the iPhone 5 comes out with it and Apple acts as though they were the first one to bring NFC to phones, as it always happens.

Wait for tech,

No Belle! BF 3 servers ruined by hackers!

Heya techies,

So, first of all HAPPY DIWALI to all Indian viewers. Now, as you know, the official release of the Belle update was yesterday, 26 Oct 11. But what am I seeing? Only an update to the old Anna and now a N8-00 Device Software update. I did both updates but no name of Belle anywhere, huh!

Maybe its just me, if you are facing same problem, I recommend you to wait about a week and then complain to the official Nokia site, if the problem continues.

Now, as you know, Battlefield 3 is gonna come but what can you expect from hackers, eh? The servers have been ruined by them after just one day of release. Here's what the makers say:

"GB : We are receiving a lot of reports that Battlefield 3 servers on the PC are being hacked. The game just came out, like, yesterday so this is definitely a worrying news. Infinity Ward said they are taking adequate precautions on the PC, but what about DICE. Looks like all these reports are detrimental to the online atmosphere"

So, thats all for now.

My App on OVI! Some about Shattered Dimesions.

Heya Techies,

As you may have seen above, my Official App is now available on OVI Store By Nokia, currently its free and with no ads. It has the following features:

1. My Tech YouTube channel right on your mobile, all videos, everything.
2. Latest Posts from my this blog.
3. My FB Fan Page of Welcome Techies.
4. Home-screen gadget for instant updates.

If you wanna download it, just click here. And yes, if you download it, dont forget to write a review and rate it!

Now, back to work! I also wanted to tell you that I've got the Spiderman : Shattered Dimensions. Now, its time for a short review!

Graphics: The graphics are quite awesome, so awesome that sometimes you'll feel as though the picture is real, though the requirements are high.

Gameplay: Gameplay is also quite awesome but sometimes you'll find that the game doesn't take input from keyboard. The fix is that you'll need a gaming keyboard, mind that.

HDD Space, and other minor features: The game requires about 13.6 GB + Space for saved games. One more good thing is that you dont have to save the game after every accomplishment, the quite good auto save feature does that well. Another thing is that you will hear spidey speaking different comments for you. For eg: If you break pots, he'll say "Yeah, that's my job, breaking pots and fooling around".

So this was all for now,

Wait for tech,

Samsung Galaxy S II Vs. iPhone 4S

Heya techies,

So, after framing all this in my mind, I finally thought to write it all down on my blog. So, here it is : The Samsung Galaxy S II Vs. iPhone 4S. We'd be comparing on the basis of : Speed, Functionality, Build Quality, Value for money, Apps, Camera, and Display.

 VS.

So, lets first start with display.

1. Display: The Samsung Galaxy S II features a 4.3 inch, world's first Super AMOLED Plus Capacitive Touchscreen, capable of slightly more than 16m colors, while the iPhone 4S features the old iPhone 4's LED backlit screen. But the iPhone is the phone in the market with higher pixel density, but the smaller 3.7 inch touchscreen looses its point here.

2. Speed: The GS2 has a Dual-core 1.2GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor with 1GB of RAM while the iPhone 4S features a 1GHz dual-core processor, the RAM is undeclared. So, again, the iPhone 4S losses its another point here.

3. Functionality: GS2 has Android 2.3 with an update for 3.1 while the iPhone features the new iOS 5. Despite of the new OS and 200 more features, the iphone still has most of the android's features. Siri is the thing that helps iPhone get the point.

4. Build Quality: Of course, the iPhone's build quality is Ace, though Samsung has tried its best to push on the build quality by adding a grip on the backside of SII, this point goes to iPhone.

5. Camera: Both feature a 8 MP camera, roughly. GSII has 8 MP, 3264x2448 pixels, autofocus, LED flash same as the iPhone 4S. But the iPhone only has Touch focus, geo-tagging, face detection while galaxy SII has Geo-tagging, touch focus, face and smile detection, image stabilization. Both record 1080p full HD video at 3ofps but iphone has video stabilization. This point goes to GSII as the camera features are more.

6. Apps: The Android store is still a way behind the App store, featuring only 150,000 apps, slightly more than half of App store, this point, obviously, goes to iPhone.

7. Value for Money: As we compare both of the phones' features, we gradually come to know that the GSII is the choice if you are a Value for Money techie.

So, we see that the GSII is the taste of thos who like fast and speedy performance and value for money, while the iPhone 4S is a disappointment for many Apple Fanboys, though it still has many apps and good build quality.

Symbian Belle Release Date, iPhone 4S

Heya Techies,

So, posting after a really prolonged period of delay...huh! Well, if you are my regular viewer, then you have the right to know why I couldn't update (even if you arent, just read!). Actually, as most of you must know, I had brought some new games. They broke my thread of posting regularly as I got addicted to them (BTW, they also broke my concentration towards CS).

Nevermind, here I am, back. First of all, the Symbian Belle update for Nokia N8, Nokia C7, Nokia E6, Nokia E7, Nokia C6-01 and the Nokia X7 will be available on 26th of October (this year, ofc). Here is its video on N8 : (It lags as the phone is flashed, not officially updated, that is)

It looks quite good, heh. Now, as you all know about the iPhone 4S, its release date in the US is today! Yes, it has quite decent build quality, optics and much more but does it have what it takes to move the market?

The release of iPhone 4S excited the Apple Fanboys, and it was the first phone which shocked the non-geeks too. But, today's other smartphones that are already in the market, give in more than they take from us. For example, the HTC Sensation is one. See this : http://welcometechies.blogspot.com/2011/10/some-about-web-of-shadows.html#en .

Second, The Samsung S II is also there : http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=4212&idPhone2=3621 It offer more value for money, too.

Maybe the price should have been down...

1. Dual core A5 processor
2. 8 MP Camera
3. iOS 5 and iCloud

The 5 Social Best Apps Ever

Heya Techies,

As I had promised to make one more post today, here I am, presenting you the best 5 social apps I could evaluate! And here is my friends, Namanyay's site : create-n.blogspot.com visit it for latest tech news like me and he also gives reviews ;)

Your smartphone is only as smart as the variety of apps its willing to run. There's a sea of apps out there but only the best deserve a spot in your smartie's space, so here are the apps fished from the sea which are the best out there.

1. Tweetbot : (iPad, iPhone) $2.99
This awesome twitter app has it all, its customisable, its powerful enough. Moreover, it supports lists, gestures, multiple accounts, instapaper and video uploads. Best for tweeting for iPhone and iPad. Im not sure whether it is available on the iPod touch also, but I do think so...

2. Glympse: (Android, iPhone, iPad, BB, Win) free
Its tagline, "Share your Where" just lets us get a glympse of the massive app. It allows you to send a "Glympse" to one of your contacts (or more) that where you are and other GPS info like speed, ETA (Expected Time Of Arrival) and some more so that he can suggest you routes, restaurants and most importantly he knows that you are just about to arrive.

3. Fourssquare: (Android, iOS, BB, Playbook, Win, Nokia, webOS) free
If you dont "Check in", how will people know that you've been there? Well, here is your GPS-enable personal assistance. This original app lets you tell your resort to friends or even know where your friends are currently checking. Also, it helps you take care of your lifestyle, just in case you become the mayor of your local boozer one day.....Wierd its called only foursquare ;)

4. Whatsapp: (Android, iPhone, BB, Nokia) free for 1 year
Dont ever say whats up, say whatsapp! This app is made for users who think that messaging is just not enough (Im one of them). Sad its bar windows, though you can send audio, video, pictures and most importantly free SMS's in a heartbeat, that what it takes to overcome BBM.

5. GetGlue (Android, iPhone, iPad, BB, Win) free
You get plenty of apps for checking out and sharing it with your friends, this is even more interesting. Tell them which TV program/movie/cartoon or even radio channels you are watching/listening to and receive awards and reward and recommendations for yourself, some bye your own friends, some by the app makers. This makes the experience of watching along on the sofa more interesting that ever!

-INTENTIONALLY LEFT BLANK-

So, huh here were the most popular and best social apps for different platforms. Next post will be a review on touchphones and their capabilities, so stay tuned (you can get latest updates by subscribing on the right!)

HP + Tech = Revolution.

Howdy techies,

So after thinking for around an hour, I came with many more ideas. Of course, Im not gonna tell them all to you now, but for the time being, take these two for granted:

1. Blackberry Torch review as soon as possible. (Apps, Build Quality, Features)

2. More flash, rich UI and ummm, as most of you who know me personally will be knowing that I am a great fan of Harry Potter by JK Rowling. So, I also decided that more of tech would be added, but along with HP (Harry Potter) info and guides etc....(Im still working on that)

So, for the time being, I've added two new gadgets on the right: the Rumour Bill and Gadget forecast and a wibiya toolbar too.

Rumour Bill: Tells you about the latest rumours going on in the tech world and HP world. This is updated every two weeks.

Gadget Forecast: Shows the latest upcoming gadgets in the market with their technology info and company name. This, too is updated every two weeks.

Okay for now its this much, now maybe I'll publish the second post today only, about....The Best Apps Ever on any platform (Android, Nokia, iOS etc) wait for all this and till then as usual,

Wait for it, Live for it
